Winter Trends: An Exploration in Texture

As the seasons change, event planning wears "different faces." Spring is light and lively. Summer tends to be vibrant and casual, and autumn usually incorporates earthy tones and comfortable decor. Winter is traditionally the time to decorate with deeper jewel tones and rich fabrics.

Perk up any winter event with unexpected color and wrap up the decor in lively shapes and cozy textures. Embrace modern design for a lighter look, but clothe those contemporary forms in fabrics as soft and comfortable as a Chanel suit or a favorite knitted throw.

No matter what kind of event you are planning -- a wedding, gallery opening, charity gala or corporate seminar -- you should coordinate the scene with complementary tables and chairs, lounge seating, bar and serving counters, cushions, pillows and table settings. Don't forget the lighting, rugs and accent pieces: Layer on interest in myriad ways in order to create a memorable setting.

Here are some suggestions to play with textures for your upcoming winter events:

Natural textured linen

If the weather outside is frightful, capitalize on the pristine effect of a mostly light-colored setting, enhanced with the homey feeling that natural linen can provide. Simple silhouettes benefit from lots of texture, and the natural look and feel of linen is a luxurious choice. Add extra interest with textured pillows—perhaps faux ermine for a dose of drama, or a luxe neutral woven homespun with hints of metallic thread.

For a truly dynamic scene, use only the deep green hues of evergreen boughs as accents, with sparkling mini-lights and lots of candles to highlight the scene.

Unexpected cozy fabrics

Charcoal linen is another look that can adapt to a winter theme. Consider the impact of this unexpected fabric on traditional Chesterfield style sofas and chairs. Just think of all the warming tones and textures you could use as accents: shades of beige, grey and brown, from light to dark, that speak of winter woods and twilight. For dramatic accessories, add an abundance of gold and a bit of midnight blue. Your setting will be as appealing as a crisp winter landscape under a starry sky.

For more dramatic effect, vary the predominant hue at the dinner tables. Drape tables in navy to-the-floor cloths; use grey napkins, gold-rimmed crystal and china, and gold-toned flatware. Charcoal linen chair seats would be classy and comfortable, no matter what the chair style.

Boucle-like fabrics

Bouclé fabrics add tactile appeal to event spaces thanks to their richness and make you feel as good as a chic Chanel suite. Use pale greys, misty blues, old golds and soft taupes to create an inviting look at any event. Search out chairs upholstered in a soft boucle fabric rather than smooth synthetic, and they'll wrap your guests in comfort for any winter event.

Complement the soft fabric with pull up side tables and servers that mix metallic frames with rustic slate or natural stone.

Rustic materials and metallics

Adding visual interest can also be achieved through the use of unique furnishings for your event including coffee tables, side tables, and more. For a textural element, incorporate rustic materials like wood. For a modern and sleek feel, choose metallic pieces for your event décor. Some event rental pieces, for example, create a strong visual impact thanks to the juxtaposition of two or more materials. Think rustic wood with metal or chrome and glass.

Winter is definitely the time to introduce additional glitz into your event decor. Layers of sleek, cozy fabrics and metallics are a perfect way to welcome and impress your guests. Incorporate textural elements in your event by being deliberate about your choice in event furniture and elements.
