The fashion and décor trends for 2017 are calling for a mix of exuberance and serenity…an appreciation for our fast-paced technology-driven climate, as well as a desire to reconnect with the invigorating senses of nature. For textiles and events, this translates into a balanced mix of high-tech and organic elements.
Here’s an example: “Manus x Machina…Fashion in the Age of Technology” was last summer’s exhibition at The Met. The theme was created to “address the founding of the haute couture in the 19th century, when the sewing machine was invented, and the emergence of a distinction between the hand (manus) and the machine (machina) at the onset of mass production.”
Fashions on the red carpet were inspired by technology and artificial intelligence, incorporating digitized and mechanical structures. Off the runway, fabrics trending in events include 3-D printing, metallic coatings in sequins, paillettes, embroidered and textured sheers, plus punched or ruched synthetic leather, like suede and vinyl. Basic colors like black, white, and gray tones form the base of this trend, with silver metallic coatings acting as the structure, or coat of armor, so-to-say. Bold prints and updated geometric shapes in textiles translate into a contemporary, urban hip theme.
Commonality
On the opposite end of the spectrum is a more organic theme. Victorian Garden romantic, brushstroke floral patterns, and colors; French Court era “Coquette” tassels, ruffles, and shantung fabrics; and 20s inspired feathers, lace, and velvets create more whimsical designs.
Subtle color palettes include gray hues with blue toned pastels, neutrals in blush and ivory, as well as, earthy and subtle green accents.
The commonality amongst both trends is the color, gray—the New Neutral. Psychologically, gray represents intellect and wisdom. It is sleek, classic, and refined…a color of compromise due to its placement on the color spectrum between the extremes of black and white. Gray and silver hues will lead with shades of blues following. Both colors will create the base of many color palettes in 2017, from fashion to home décor and design, to dressing special event tables and venues!
