What’s more popular in the events industry then trends? Not much. As event professionals, knowing the comings and goings of what’s in and what’s out is part of our job description. Clients are going to walk in with tons of new ideas and expect us to know what they’re talking about, so it’s important to always be one step ahead of everyone else. How do you do it? See some of my top tips below.

Scope out the runways

The designers that are showcasing their work on the catwalk are the leaders of the fashion industry, and inevitably their influence will flow into the events business. From bridal gowns to florals to linens, their designs will absolutely have an impact on what people want in the upcoming year. Mark the big fashion weeks on your calendar so you don’t forget to take a peek online at what’s going on. Better yet, get a ticket and go see one in person if you can.

Interior design & architecture

This may not be the most obvious, but events and interior design go hand in hand. Roam the aisles of your favorite home store, or purchase their catalog to get ideas. You’ll often find that next year’s table designs will be on display, along with color palettes, textures, patterns, and materials. Home décor this year is full of clues for what next year’s clients will be talking about.

Visit a tradeshow or expo

Get out of your comfort zone and walk through a tradeshow from an industry other than events. It could be anything from lighting to the environment, since events take inspiration from so many different areas- you can’t go wrong. The experience will be a brand new way to open your eyes to something outside the box, and your clients will appreciate it down the road.

Pinterest

Yes, it is often said that as soon as something pops up on Pinterest, it’s already going out of style. While that may be true in some cases, it is possible to still get some new and innovative ideas from it. By broadening your category searches to outside events, it’s easy to find new trends that haven’t yet hit. Searching a season or a color without putting the words event or wedding in it is a good start. You can get even more creative with style keywords like, modern or bohemian to get more specific pin boards.

Staying ahead of trends takes time and research, but will no doubt have a big pay off when your clients walk in and you’ve got ideas they never even considered. You’ll be known as a trendsetter in no time.
