South Asian Destination Weddings are on the Rise
May 12, 2015
It wasn’t too long ago that destination weddings were far from thought when clients embarked upon planning their extravaganzas. As destination wedding specialists, we’re experiencing a surge in interest with South Asian couples, who are now finding limitless options that serve their unique needs and honor their culture and traditions. Select resorts are modifying menus, customizing space, and creating easy access to everything they want and need to say “I Do” with flair.
It should be no surprise that the industry has made headway with catering to the South Asian couple as destination weddings in general are on the rise. Couples recognize that they are no longer bound by geography when planning their celebrations, and are turning to every point on the globe to find new and unique locations to exchange vows. That major resort properties are excited to welcome South Asian weddings is a natural outgrowth of this trend.
In particular, a growing segment of properties in the Caribbean and Mexico have embraced South Asian weddings, even creating special packages. Recognizing that South Asian weddings are often celebrated over multiple days, some Mexican resorts are now offering wedding packages that span over three days with up to six individual celebrations and can accommodate groups up to 75 and more.
Yes, your client can have their mandap in the Eastern Caribbean, their vegetarian menu in coastal Mexico, and island-style “mocktails” on an actual island! On-site florists are at hand through many of the properties and many are familiar with cultures that embrace the bold color palettes and vibrant designs synonymous with South Asian weddings. They may find them even better suited to their style than one would have expected! These resorts also often have experienced Mehndi artists guests can book to apply henna during the celebrations.
Above all, open communication will mitigate any confusion. This will help you select the best property for your client, and prepare their chosen property to best serve them. While some properties have become well-versed at South Asian weddings, it is still smart to be communicative up front about any specific needs, especially those that are particularly religious and cultural in nature. Venues want to honor wishes, and sometimes need guidance to do this effectively.
In return, don’t rule out honoring the local culture. Fusion menus and décor are rising in popularity. Allow some of the destination to merge with their own traditions and give guests the best of both worlds! Of course, still bring those things most sacred to the couple – their sari, their ceremonies, and of course their loved ones!
The future of South Asian destination weddings is here, and it is bright indeed.
